FM 2551 in Parker: What the TxDOT Project Changes and When

TxDOT is rebuilding FM 2551 between Parker Road and Estates Parkway on a new alignment. As of October 2026 it was about half done, with substantial completion expected in spring 2028.

The road and why it matters

FM 2551 is Parker's main north-south road. Inside the city it is known as Dillehay Drive, and to the south it continues into Murphy as Murphy Road. To the north it connects Parker with Lucas, Lucas Road, Bethany Drive, and the routes west to Allen and US 75. For the neighborhoods north of Parker Road, including Parker Lake Estates, Kings Crossing, Southridge, and Whitestone, it is the most direct way in and out.

The Texas Department of Transportation is reconstructing the corridor between Parker Road and Estates Parkway in Lucas. Parts of the new road follow a new alignment rather than the existing pavement, which changes how several Parker streets connect to it.

Where the project stands in October 2026

The City of Parker hosted a town hall with TxDOT on October 1, 2026. TxDOT Collin County Area Engineer Jennifer Vorster, P.E., and Director of Construction Brenan Honey, P.E., presented and answered resident questions. The city then posted a video, the presentation, and a written FAQ on its FM 2551 project page.

Key status points from that FAQ:

Item Status as of October 2026
Overall completion About 50 percent
Traffic shift, FM 1378 to West Lucas Road Expected early 2027
Traffic shift, West Lucas Road to Bethany Drive Expected summer 2027
Substantial completion Expected spring 2028

Why it is behind schedule

TxDOT gave these reasons for the delays:

  • Unexpected conflicts with existing and relocated utilities
  • Contractor staffing problems that slowed production
  • Complex construction conditions between West Lucas Road and FM 2170
  • North Texas Municipal Water District 60-inch and 72-inch water lines near the work
  • Several gas lines within a narrow right-of-way, requiring extra precautions

The water lines matter beyond the project itself. NTMWD supplies the water Parker sells to its residents, so work near those mains moves carefully.

How Parker streets connect to the new road

Dillehay Drive

Dillehay will connect directly to the new FM 2551 alignment with a median opening. Repairs to Dillehay itself will be handled under a separate contract.

Curtis Road

The existing Curtis Road will end where the new FM 2551 alignment begins. TxDOT is not proposing a traffic signal at FM 2551 and Curtis Lane.

Ravensthorpe Drive and Southridge

Residents raised concerns about drivers leaving FM 2551 and cutting north through Ravensthorpe Drive. TxDOT does not plan to close Ravensthorpe unless the city asks, since it is a public road. The city said it is exploring a possible permanent closure with the Southridge HOA and TxDOT, with no final plan as of October 2026.

Lucas and Bethany intersections

Residents asked for better temporary traffic control at Bethany Drive and Lucas Road at Angel Parkway, and at Main Street and Estates Drive at Angel Parkway. TxDOT said it is assessing those intersections and will make improvements it finds necessary.

Signals, lighting, and speed

  • No new signals or streetlights are part of this project. The city plans to ask TxDOT for traffic studies on whether signals are needed along FM 2551.
  • Stinson Road and Parker Road: a new signal has been authorized at this intersection.
  • Lewis Lane and Parker Road: no signal is proposed now. The city plans to request a study as traffic on Parker Road and FM 2551 grows.
  • Work zone speed limit: it has not been lowered. Under Texas law, a reduced work zone limit must be justified by restrictive conditions and authorized through formal engineering procedures. TxDOT says it will keep reviewing the question as conditions change.
  • Requesting a signal: send the request to the City of Parker, which can ask TxDOT for a signal study.

Trucks and oversize loads

TxDOT cannot ban all 18-wheeler traffic on FM 2551 during construction. Restrictions on oversized loads stay in place until the project is finished.

Reporting problems during construction

TxDOT handles maintenance and safety issues inside the work zone, including:

  • Potholes or pavement damage
  • Visibility problems caused by cones, signs, or barriers
  • Drainage problems on private property caused by construction

Contact TxDOT's Collin County area office at 972-542-2345 or Jennifer Vorster at jennifer.vorster@txdot.gov. The FAQ also lists 972-547-2231 for questions and safety concerns. Copies of the project plans can be requested by email from the same contact. TxDOT's online Project Tracker shows project information statewide.

The City of Parker said it will request updates from TxDOT and post them on its FM 2551 page.

What it means for residents and buyers

  • Daily driving: expect lane shifts on FM 2551 through 2027. Parker Road west to Plano and Lewis Lane north to Lucas Road are the main alternatives.
  • Neighborhood traffic: Southridge and Ravensthorpe Drive are most affected by cut-through concerns. The city's decision on a possible closure is still pending.
  • Property access: homes near Curtis Road and Dillehay Drive will see access change as the old roadway ends and the new alignment opens.
  • Nearby development: the proposed Restore the Grasslands development sits next to FM 2551. Its access, through a TxDOT driveway permit, is one of the open issues the city has raised.
